What Would I Rate Myself? Handle App Founder Rates His Own Game

Handle is a platform for basketball players to be rated by people who have seen them play.

I created Handle as a platform for basketball players to rate each other after they have seen them play.

That raises an obvious question for myself as the founder: If I had to use Handle to rate my own game, what would I give myself?

I have been playing basketball for over 25 years starting at 10 years old playing pick up at the park. at 6’9 I played through high school including 3 years at the varsity level, then went on to play Junior College, Division I NCAA, and European professional basketball. This is going to be a mini series of what I think the community would have rated my game at each level I played at. in In this post I will rate myself at the high school level.

What is a Handle Rating?

I’ll give a brief description about what a Rating on handle is and what it means for you. A rating on Handle means that someone in the community saw you play, went to app.joinhandle.app, found your profile, and gave you a rating. Ratings are scored 1-99 based on a person’s observation of 5 basketball attributes, Ball Handling, Basketball IQ, Shooting, Defense, and Athleticism. The Handle app keeps track of all of your ratings and provides you a community rating that you can show to any one. Your Community rating becomes a part of your basketball identity. For more information see my post all about (Link Handle Ratings). Ratings are purely objective but they can be an indicator of what a player may be strong in or nee to work on.

Now, as the founder what would I rate my self as a center/power forward? I am going give myself fair and objective rating based on feedback from other, film that i have watched of myself, and how I have performed in the past in organized games at all the levels that i have played at.

If you have an opinion about how i rate myself I invite anybody join Handle, rate me, then challenge me to a game and see if my rating holds up.

Ball Handling - 59

As a center/power forward my role has never really been ball handling so i am by no means Kyrie with it. But in a pinch I can put the ball on the floor. I can catch and I am strong with the ball reducing turnovers when i get the ball. I practice ball handling, I’m confident with post dribbling, and driving 2-3 dribbles to the basket. I feel like 59 is a fair rating for myself. I have good handles for my position but if I am moved to a different position I would be out of my element.

Basketball IQ - 79

Making smart plays on offense and defense comes with experience over time and playing at different levels of competition. I always worked to pick up tricks and learn from my mistakes so that i could translate that to my game. A little trash talk, building connections with my team mates, making the right read at the right time, and pushing the limits of the rules are all things I would do so that i could gain an edge in the game. I learned that when every play matters, thinking the game and coming up with a strategy can make the difference. I would give myself a rating of 79 here.

Shooting - 65

I was not known for have a jump shot but again in a pinch I could hit a shot or two. I can score in the paint reliably. My senior year of college I was 56% from the field among the highest in the nation. But my position and role rarely extended me beyond mid-range. I have worked on my shot and I am confident stretching out to 20-30 ft for a set jumper. 65 because I can hit a shot here and there or a game of Horse would get competitive.

Defense - 81

I think defense is one of my strongest attributes and where i made the most impact on the game. At 6’9 and 265+ I am tall and have large frame that helps me alter a lot of offenses. Through highschool, college, and pros I would get blocks, defensive rebounds, and make things hard for the other teams. I think most of the teammates i have ever had would say that they trust me on defense and that with out me in the game I make a big difference.

Athleticism - 70

In terms of athleticism I would say i am moderately athletic. For my size and weight I am fast, I can jump, and I am strong with moderate stamina. I can jump with most basketball players and I have had a fair share of dunks in game. A 70 for athleticism.
